A few stray ants on the kitchen worktop rarely feel like an emergency, yet they are usually the first sign of a much larger colony working away out of sight.
By the time you spot a steady line marching toward the sugar bowl, hundreds more are tucked away in a nest you cannot see. That is where our ant control Cardiff team comes in, clearing the colony at its source rather than chasing the workers you notice.
Cardiff Pest Control Co. is the Cardiff branch of the Pest Solutions group, one of the UK’s fastest-growing pest control companies. With more than 20 years of pest control experience behind us, plus BPCA accreditation and CEPA certification, we treat ant problems properly the first time, for homes and businesses across the city and the wider South Wales area.
The ants we deal with most in Cardiff
Not every ant problem is the same, and the right treatment depends on which species has moved in. The two we are called out to most often could not be more different.
Black garden ants
The everyday culprit in Cardiff homes is the black garden ant (Lasius niger). These small, dark ants file across patios, slip under skirting boards and head straight for anything sweet in the kitchen. They nest outdoors in soil, beneath paving slabs and along path edges, then send foragers indoors as the weather warms through spring and summer. The older brickwork and mature gardens of Roath, Canton and Grangetown give them ample nesting room and easy routes inside.
You will really notice them on the hot, sticky days of July and August, when winged ants pour out of nests across the city in their thousands. These flying-ant swarms are the colony’s annual breeding flight, as new queens and males leave to mate and start nests of their own. The swarm is harmless in itself, but it signals that established nests are nearby.
Pharaoh ants and other tropical species
Far more troublesome are pharaoh ants and similar tropical species. These tiny yellow-brown ants are not native to Britain, but they thrive in heated buildings where warmth stays constant all year. We find them in hospitals, care homes, blocks of flats, hotels and commercial kitchens, nesting deep within wall cavities and around heating pipes.
Pharaoh ants are a serious matter rather than a nuisance. They can carry harmful bacteria such as salmonella, making them a genuine risk anywhere food is prepared or vulnerable people are cared for. They are also notoriously stubborn, and clearing them takes patience, the right products and a methodical approach. This is firmly a job for a professional.
How to tell you have an ant problem
Ants are not subtle once a colony is established. The signs to watch for include:
- Steady trails of workers running the same route, often toward a food source or moisture
- Small heaps of fine soil pushed up between paving slabs, patio joints and along driveways
- Ants emerging from brickwork, air bricks, cavity walls or around door and window frames
- Sudden clouds of winged ants on warm summer days, indoors or out
- Live ants returning to the same spot however often you clean them away
Repeated activity in one place usually means the nest is close by, and a professional inspection will quickly confirm the species and location.
Why shop-bought sprays usually let you down
It is tempting to reach for a tin of ant spray, and at first it seems to work, since the ants you can see drop within minutes. The trouble is that those foragers are a tiny fraction of the colony, and killing them does nothing to the queen, who keeps laying eggs to replace every worker you remove. Within days the trails return.
With pharaoh ants, DIY sprays do not just fail, they make things worse. Sensing a chemical threat, the colony splits and scatters in a process called budding, with separate groups building fresh nests elsewhere in the building. One pharaoh ant problem quickly becomes several, which is why we ask people to call us before reaching for the spray can.
Our approach to ant control
Lasting results come from understanding the colony, not just the insects on the surface, so every job follows the same pattern.
Identifying the species and the nest
We begin with a full survey to confirm which ant we are dealing with and to track the workers back to their nest. Telling a garden ant apart from a pharaoh ant matters enormously, because the two demand different handling, and knowing where the colony sits, whether under the patio or in a cavity wall, is what makes the treatment effective.
Professional gel baiting
For most infestations we rely on professional-grade gel baits placed along the trails the ants are already using. The workers feed on the bait and carry it back into the nest, sharing it through the colony until it reaches the queen herself.
Because the effect is slow and deliberate, the ants spread it throughout the population before it acts, destroying the whole colony rather than just the visible foragers. For pharaoh ants this approach is especially valuable, as it avoids the scattering that sprays trigger.
Proofing and hygiene advice
Once the colony is cleared, we help you keep it that way, pointing out the gaps and entry routes worth sealing and offering advice on storing food and managing the conditions that draw ants indoors. All of our work uses environmentally responsible, humane methods and complies fully with UK pest control and wildlife legislation.
