A handful of mice can turn into a serious problem before you have even spotted the first one.
House mice breed quickly, hide well and slip through gaps you would never expect, which is exactly why so many local households end up needing proper mice control in Cardiff rather than another box of supermarket traps.
At Cardiff Pest Control Co. we find, treat and seal out mice for good, with a free survey to get you started.
As one of the UK’s fastest-growing pest control companies. That means your local team is BPCA-accredited and CEPA-certified, backed by more than 20 years of pest control experience, the latest equipment and ongoing training.
Whether you own a Victorian terrace in Roath, a flat near the city centre or a busy unit in Cardiff Bay, we know how to clear an infestation and stop it coming back.
A Common Problem in Cardiff Homes and Flats
Mice thrive wherever people do, and Cardiff offers them plenty. The city’s older housing stock is a big part of the picture. Streets of Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Cathays, Roath, Canton and Grangetown were never built to modern airtight standards, so they are full of the small voids, suspended floors and shared party walls that mice love.
We are called out to all sorts of properties, including:
- Terraced and end-of-terrace family homes
- Converted flats and HMOs near the universities in Cathays and Roath
- Older semis and detached houses across Llandaff, Whitchurch and Heath
- Cafes, takeaways and restaurants around the city centre and Cardiff Bay
- Student lets where a single shared kitchen feeds the whole building
The mild, damp South Wales climate works in the mouse’s favour too. Winters are rarely harsh enough to knock numbers back outdoors, so the moment the weather turns, they head indoors looking for warmth, food and a quiet place to nest.

How Mice Get Into Your Property
People are often amazed at the size of gap a mouse can use. An adult house mouse can squeeze through an opening no wider than a biro, roughly the thickness of a pencil, because it can collapse its body through anything its skull will fit. In a typical Cardiff terrace there are dozens of such routes.
The classic entry points we find include:
- Gaps where pipes and cables pass through external walls, especially around boilers, sinks and waste pipes
- Cavity walls and the airbricks that ventilate them
- Worn thresholds under front and back doors
- Cracked mortar, missing pointing and small holes in old brickwork
- Drains and the voids beneath suspended timber floors
- Roof spaces reached via overhanging branches or gaps at the eaves
Cooler months bring a noticeable spike in callouts. As temperatures drop from autumn into winter, mice that have spent the warmer season outdoors push inside, which is why so many people first hear scratching in the loft or behind a kitchen unit just as the heating goes on.
The Signs of a Mouse Problem
You will usually hear or smell mice before you see one, because they are shy and largely nocturnal. Knowing what to look for means you can act early, before a couple of mice become a colony.
Droppings
The most reliable clue is droppings. Mouse droppings are small, dark and roughly the shape of a grain of rice, and you tend to find them clustered along skirting boards, inside cupboards, at the back of drawers and around food packaging. Fresh ones are soft and shiny.
Smear Marks and Gnawing
As mice run the same routes night after night, the grease and dirt in their fur leaves dark smear marks along walls, pipes and the edges of holes. You may also notice gnawing, because mice must wear down their constantly growing front teeth. Look for chewed packaging, nibbled skirting and frayed cables.
Scratching at Night and a Musky Smell
Scratching, scrabbling or light scurrying overhead or behind the walls after dark is a common giveaway, particularly in lofts and stud partitions. An established infestation also produces a distinctive stale, musky, ammonia-like odour from urine and nesting that lingers in enclosed spaces.
Nests
Mice build nests from whatever soft material they can shred, such as loft insulation, cardboard, paper and fabric. Tucked-away corners, the backs of appliances, airing cupboards and under-floor voids are all favourite spots.
Why Mice Are a Risk You Should Not Ignore
A mouse problem is far more than a nuisance. Because mice scurry between drains, bins and your worktops, they readily contaminate food and surfaces with droppings, urine and hair. That contamination can carry bacteria such as salmonella, along with other stomach bugs, putting your family or your customers at real risk.
Then there is the damage. Mice gnaw constantly, and chewed electrical wiring is one of the most serious hazards we see, because exposed cabling is a genuine cause of house fires. They will also shred insulation, packaging and stored belongings.
The biggest danger of all is how fast they multiply. A single female can produce litter after litter through the year, so a problem that seems minor in October can be deeply established by spring. Acting quickly almost always means a smaller, cheaper and less stressful job.
Our Mice Control Approach
Every property is different, so we never turn up with a one-size-fits-all answer. Our Cardiff pest controllers follow a clear, three-stage method built around finding the cause, not just the symptoms.
Thorough Survey
We begin with a detailed inspection of your home or premises, inside and out. The aim is to confirm the activity, judge how far it has spread and, crucially, trace exactly how the mice are getting in. We check the obvious harbourage and the hidden routes, then explain our findings in plain English.
Targeted Treatment
Next we put a tailored treatment in place using a considered mix of professional baiting and trapping, sited precisely where the mice are active and travelling. Our technicians work to strict safety standards, with bait secured in tamper-resistant stations so it stays away from children, pets and non-target wildlife. We use humane, environmentally responsible methods throughout and stay fully compliant with UK pest control and wildlife legislation.
Proofing the Entry Points
This is the step shop-bought products miss entirely. Once the mice are gone, we seal the gaps that let them in using durable, rodent-proof materials, from wire wool and sealant to mesh and door brushes. Proofing is what turns a temporary fix into a lasting one, so the next cold snap does not simply invite a fresh wave indoors.
Why Professional Control Beats DIY Traps and Poisons
It is tempting to grab a few snap traps or a tub of poison from the local shop, but these rarely solve a real infestation. Off-the-shelf baits are weaker than professional formulations, easy to use incorrectly and risky around pets and children. A couple of traps catch the careless mice while the rest keep breeding out of sight.
More importantly, DIY never deals with the why. You can clear the mice you can see and still leave every entry point wide open. Our team brings the training, the right products and the proofing know-how to break that cycle, and we back it up with advice on keeping your property mouse-free long term. For wider rodent issues we also cover full rodent control, along with dedicated rat control and squirrel control where those are the culprits.
We look after domestic and commercial clients right across Cardiff and the wider South Wales area, including Penarth, Barry, the Vale of Glamorgan, Caerphilly and Newport. Same-day callouts are available, and our 24/7 emergency helpline is there when a problem simply cannot wait.
